DECANTER IN DARK BLUE GLASS with
DECORATION
England, laic 18th century lit. 277 mm (1088 in.)
(See also tomur photograph 24)
Bristol in England is famous for the dark
blue glass it produced during the 18th
century. Unfortunately, there has been a
tendency to ascribe all dark blue glass to
Bristol, so it must be stressed that the same
kind of glass was also made at other
centres during the 18th century. Indeed,
its manufacture became fairly general
throughout England by the end of the
century, so definite attribution to Bristol
has to be made very carefully. Lazarus
Jacobs (d.1796) and his son Isaac had a
glass-house in Temple Street, Bristol,
where they are said to have specialised in
dark blue glass products. Lazarus Jacobs
advertised himself as ‘glass-maker to King
George III’, and between 1785 and 1787
employed Michael Edkins, who reputedly-
decorated their blue glass with gilding.
The gilt key fret border is a distinctive
decoration of the blue glass. Specimens
signed ‘I. Jacobs, Bristol’ in gilt (possibly
by the hand of Michael Edkins) include
decanters, wine-coolers and finger bowls.
The Bristol Directory records the Jacobs as
being in business between 1775 and the
early 19th century.

ROUGHLY ENGRAVED
England, end of the 18th century
Ht. 83 mm (325 in.)
Besides the Jacobs’ products, toilet bott es,
patch-boxes and dishes were also popular
items in the dark blue glass, usually gilt
sometimes with Chinese motifs. The rjich
blue ‘Bristol’ glass was used by silver-
smiths to enhance their new pierced ware
products, the open designs in silver being
lined with dark blue glass. A lighter blue
glass in England was also used for mach
humbler country-market wares, sucW as
sugar-basins, milk-jugs and occasionally
vases. The rather crude little vase illus-
trated is roughly engraved with an im-
pression of Yarmouth Bridge surmounted
by its name ‘YARMOUTH BRIDGE’:
the engraving shows traces of gilding, ijt is
known that about the same time as the
Jacobs were operating, William Absolbn,
the independent painter of Yarmouth, Vas
decorating opaque white, blue and other
coloured glasses, as well as clear colourless
glass and pottery. The fashion for blue And
other coloured glasses died in Englanc in
the early decades of the 19th century, tc be
replaced by the new interest in char,
colourless glass.
SPRINKLER IN BLUE GLASS
Persia, 17th 18th century. Ht. 388 mm (15-3 in.)
Deep blue seems to have been the most
popular colour used by the Shirazi glass-
workers of Persia in the 17th and 18th
centuries. Luxury glassware had been
produced in Persia under the Sassanian
emperors, but this apparently ceased for
some three centuries following the Mongol
conquests. The industry was revived in the
reign of Shah Abbas the Great (1587
1628), the art being taught to the Persians
by an Italian glass-maker. It is therefore
not surprising that the glass resembles
Venetian forms of the Renaissance and
Baroque period, and indeed the material
and forms continue to the modern period
with a remarkable consistency. The in-
dustry flourished, exports to Batavia,
Sumatra and India being recorded in the
17th century. Glass was made everywhere
in Persia, but the finest glass came from the
Shiraz region, where the best raw materials
were available. The rose-water sprinkler
illustrated is a typical product.
